The fire was extinguished as soon as possible. The captain ordered that the ship be brought to the surface so that the smoke could be released into the air. The ship's exact position at the time of the incident is kept secret, but is in North Atlantic waters. Meanwhile a British Royal Navy source said all crew members had been trained to handle emergencies such as sudden fires.

It was also stated that the incident did not affect the ship's operations so it could continue to explore the ocean. However the damage caused by the fire forced the captain to abort the secret mission. HMS Victorious was brought back to the HMNB Clyde base, Faslane, Scotland.

The 30-year-old submarine is one of four British Royal Navy nuclear deterrence patrol units operating non-stop. The Navy ensured the incident did not affect ongoing nuclear threat deterrence operations.
