It is known that the United States (US) and South Korean troops launched eight ballistic missiles on Monday, June 6, 2022.

The Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) surface-to-ground missile was fired by South Korea and the US in response to North Korea's test launch of a ballistic missile the day before. According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the two countries launched ATACMS missiles at several targets in the East Sea, also known as the Sea of ​​Japan, in the early hours of the morning.

According to Defense Security Asia, eight missiles were fired by US and South Korean forces in about 10 minutes. One missile was launched by the US military while seven missiles were launched by the South Korean military. Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) is a surface-to-ground missile developed by US defense company Lockheed Martin and is capable of hitting targets up to 300 km away.

The missile can be launched using the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS), and the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). In addition to the US and South Korea, ATACMS is also used by the Turkish and Greek armies.

The launch came a day after North Korea launched eight short-range ballistic missiles shortly after the United States and South Korea completed their joint military exercises. "Our troops strongly condemn North Korea's series of ballistic missile provocations. We also urge the republic to immediately stop actions that increase military tension on the peninsula," he explained.

The latest launch demonstrates the mutual strength of the country's allies under the leadership of new South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol who has vowed to take tougher action against Pyongyang. North Korea launched eight short-range ballistic missiles into its eastern coastal waters on Sunday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

At the missile launch by Pyongyang, the South Korean Army Chief of Staff said it detected the launch from the Sunan area in North Korea at around 09:08 to 09:43 local time. He also said the South Korean military maintains a position of full alert in close cooperation with the US while continuing to strengthen surveillance and vigilance.

It was the 18th missile launch by North Korea this year and the third since South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol took office on May 10, Xinhua reported citing a Yonhap News Agency report. The president's office said a national security council meeting would be held to discuss North Korea's missile launch.

According to Yonhap News, Seoul officials have warned that Pyongyang's military provocations will be met with an appropriate reaction. Shortly after North Korea's three ballistic missile launches, including an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), on May 25, South Korea and the US carried out a joint missile launch in their first joint move since 2017.
