Taiwan Plans to Modify F-5 Fighter Jets Into Combat Drones

Taipei - President of Taiwan's National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, Zhang Zhongcheng, said he intends to Modify the F-5 Fighter Jet that has been retired by the Taiwan Air Force (ROCAF) into a Combat Drone (UCAV). This modification is expected to increase ROCAF's strength in facing the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA).

As is well known, the ROCAF, which has operated the F-5E for more than four decades, is now starting to retire the aircraft and start replacing them with domestically produced fighter jets. Local media reported that Taiwan's AIDC T-5 Brave Eagle Advanced Trainer will be mass-produced and gradually delivered to the Taiwan Air Force.

These aircraft will replace approximately 40 RCAF F-5s. A total of 45 Brave Eagles will be produced where 33 of these aircraft will be deployed at Taitung Air Base, Chihhang. Meanwhile, 12 more units are at Gangshan Air Base.
