Moscow - Russian troops received new weapons in the form of a Tornado G artillery rocket system with a new type of 122 mm ammunition. The Tornado G artillery rocket system is a multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) capable of firing multiple rockets up to 40 Km.

Artillery rocket systems which are often called MLRS or Multiple rocket launchers (MRL) are capable of firing a number of rockets simultaneously. The combination of rocket firing was carried out to overcome weaknesses regarding accuracy and the slow reloading process.

However, once upgraded, modern artillery rockets can use GPS or inertial guidance, thus being able to hit targets more accurately.

Like the new Russian Tornado G rocket ammunition which has been upgraded so that it has better accuracy and range.

The Tornado G artillery rocket was modernized by NPO Splav and Technodynamics from the old Grad 9K51 rocket. The upgraded Tornado G rocket has also received a new engine and a high-precision control and guidance system.

"Thanks to this capability, the MLRS Tornado G rocket can attack area targets and point targets with set coordinates. The Tornado-G rocket with the new ammunition can simultaneously hit several targets at different distances from one salvo firing at the same time,” Quoted from the Bulgarian Military.

The MLRS Tornado G artillery rocket system has four rows of 10 launch tubes each. Each tube launches one high-explosive 122mm rocket ammunition, in salvo. The rocket launch system is mounted on a GAZ-66B or Kamaz Truck chassis.

“This is a conceptually new system and its efficiency will last for years. Such rockets have been produced in series," Splav CEO Alexander Smirnov was quoted as saying by TASS.

Smirnov said that the Tornado G long-range multiple launch rocket system can engage targets over an area of more than 60 hectares. The system is capable of firing single rockets and salvos from 40 launch tubes.

MLRS Tornado G can fire three types of rockets, namely high explosive rockets (HE), fragmentation rockets (HE-Frag), and anti-tank rockets (HEAT). In the military, the three types of rockets are coded 9M538, 9M539 and 9M541.
