Moscow - Video of a supersonic Su-34 fighter jet crashing into an apartment building in the southern Russian city of Yeysk on Monday has gone viral. The death toll has risen to four people and 25 others injured. This incident occurred as Russia's war with Ukraine continued to rage. Russia reportedly attacked the Ukrainian capital with kamikaze drones. Video footage of the Su-34 fighter jet crash shows a giant fireball emerging from a high-rise apartment building shortly after being hit by the fighter jet.

Russian emergency services confirmed the apartment building was badly burned with several upper floors collapsing. Dozens of injured victims have been taken to hospital. Three children aged between eight and 10 were among the injured. In addition, six other people are still missing.

Yeysk is a city in Krasnodar, southern Russia, and is located across the Sea of Azov from the city of Mariupol. Deputy Governor of the Krasnodar Territory Anna Minkova told Gazeta.ru that at least three people died as a result of falling from the upper floors of the apartment. Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said the fighter jet pilot had ejected to safety.

According to the ministry, the crash was caused by a malfunction of the plane's engine. "According to reports from the ejected pilot, the accident was caused by the combustion of one of the engines during takeoff," the ministry said, as quoted by Russia Today, Tuesday (18/10/2022).

The Russian military added the fighter jet was scheduled to perform a training flight, meaning that the jet was not equipped with ammunition. The Krasnodar Territory Authority said the accident caused a massive fire that damaged at least 17 apartments. According to emergency services, the blaze at the scene was under control, including a blaze in the plane's wreckage. Thus, the evacuation of residents from a nearby apartment building was cancelled.
