Manama - Bahrain has secured approval from the US Department of State for the acquisition of 24 ex-US Marine Corps AH-1W SuperCobra attack/multimission helicopters which will later be refurbished. The purchase of two dozen helicopters, according to the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on March 29, has an estimated value of US$350 million and will be implemented through Foreign Military Sales (FMS).

Please note, all of these helicopters have been retired and will be revived.

Previously, Bahrain had applied for the purchase of equipment and services to overhaul 24 AH-1W multirole helicopters from EDA (Excess Defense Articles).

The upgrades to the AH-1W helicopters include overhauled Aircraft Procedures Trainer (APT), spare M272A1 missile launchers, T-700-GE-401 aircraft engines, spare parts, support, training, publications, logistics elements, and other related program support. Acting as the main contractor according to the contract is the Bell Corporation of Fort Worth, Texas.
