Algiers - Algeria is reportedly in talks with China to acquire Chinese-made SY-400 short-range ballistic missiles, as reported by Tactical Report (24/11).

SY-400 also called DF-12A is a mobile ballistic missile system, designed and manufactured by China North Industries Group Corporation Limited (Norinco) and inaugurated in 2008. The missile is placed on a TEL (Transporter Erector Launcher) vehicle based on the chassis the Wanshan 8X8 truck has eight containers each carrying one solid fuel missile.

The vehicle is driven using a Deutz Diesel engine which produces 517 hp of power. The maximum road speed is 75 km/h and the operating range is 650 km. The missile is launched vertically and has a firing range of around 400 km. The missile can carry various types of warheads up to 200 kg and is equipped with a GPS/INS guidance system.

In its combat mission, the SY-400 system is supported by a reloading vehicle, equipped with a crane, which carries a full set of reloading containers. China and Algeria have increasingly close military ties.

It is known, since the 2010s, China has provided a large amount of land military equipment to Algeria. The equipment includes the PLZ-45 155 mm self-propelled howitzer (SPH), SR-5 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS), as well as Type-07 and WZ-502G Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) vehicles.
