Japan Receives Again Delivery of E-2D Advanced Hawkeye Aircraft from the United States

Tokyo - Japan on October 18 took delivery of another E-2D Advanced Hawkeye airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft from the United States. The aircraft was delivered wrapped and unloaded from the carrier at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan. This aircraft will add to the strength of the Japan Air Self Defense Force (JASDF) AEW aircraft.

The JASDF currently has a total of 13 E-2Ds to replace the same number of E-2C Hawkeyes it has operated since 1983. Japan is also the largest E-2 operator outside the US. The Northrop Grumman company delivered the first new E-2D to Japan in 2019. By the end of 2022, a total of five aircraft will have been delivered according to the original plan.

The equipped aircraft has a new radar and improved aircraft systems. The heart of the E-2D sensor is the APY-9 radar system specially designed to provide surveillance detection and capability against advanced threat aircraft and cruise missile systems in land, coastal and open sea environments.

With the addition of aerial refueling capabilities, the E-2D is the world's most advanced command and control platform, claims Northrop Grumman.
