Ukrainian Military Announces Success in Shooting Down Russian Su-24 Fencer Fighter Jet

Kiev - Ukraine's military on Friday announced its air defense systems had shot down a Russian Su-24 fighter jet also known as the Fencer fighter jet.

"During today, the flights of the Defense Forces have reached 4 focus areas of enemy life force and military equipment and 1 support point. The enemy's losses are being determined," the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said.

"In addition, our air defense units in various directions destroyed the Su-24 aircraft, two winged missiles and one Gulf attack," the announcement continued, as quoted by Newsweek, Saturday (17/9/2022).

According to the Airforce-Technology.com website, the Su-24 aircraft are manufactured by the Moscow-based Sukhoi Design Bureau Joint Stock Company and the Novosibirsk Aircraft Production Association. The site says the Su-24M entered service in 1983 and is a development of the Su-24, known by the NATO code name "Fencer".

The Ukrainian military announcement comes as the Kiev Armed Forces continue its counter-offensive, hoping to retake control of several territories, including Kherson. "The threat of aviation and missile strikes throughout Ukraine remains," the Ukrainian Armed Forces said in an update.

"The enemy continues to terrorize civilians, attack residential neighborhoods and civilian infrastructure, in violation of International Humanitarian Law, the laws and customs of war." The update also says that while the Russian Armed Forces have fired several rockets and air strikes on various areas of Ukraine, "the enemy suffers significant losses of military personnel and equipment on a daily basis, which greatly affects the psychological state of the invaders".
