Two Drones Loaded Bomb Attack Turkish bases in Northern Iraq

Ankara - Two bomb-laden drones targeted a Turkish military base in northern Iraq on Friday (22/7/2022). The news was revealed by a local mayor.

The drone strike comes amid rising tensions in recent days after nine Iraqi civilians were killed in an alleged Turkish shelling.

The Turkish army has maintained dozens of outposts over the past 25 years across northern Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region as part of its campaign against insurgents. "Two bomb-laden drones that attacked the Turkish base in the village of Bamerne this morning were shot down without causing any casualties," Mayor Miran Ismail said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, but a pro-Iran Telegram channel popular with pro-Tehran armed factions in Iraq praised the actions of the "Iraqi resistance."

On Wednesday, an artillery attack on a recreation area in Kurdistan killed nine civilians, including women and children, and injured 23 others.

Most of the victims were tourists from southern or central Iraq who had gone to the country's northern mountainous regions to escape the summer heat.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi blamed Turkey for the attack and warned Baghdad had the right to retaliate. Turkey, however, has denied responsibility and has instead accused rebels from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) of doing so. The tragedy, condemned by most Iraqi political figures, sparked public outrage and sparked angry demonstrations.
