Moscow - Russian air defense systems will now have no problem detecting and destroying missiles fired from the US-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS).

The reason is that now the Russian defense system already has new software. RIA Novosti reported this on Friday (2/12/2022), citing an unnamed Russian military commander.

According to the officer serving in Russia's Zaporozhye Region, Ukrainian troops initially used Soviet-era weapons, but have now switched to weapons provided by NATO countries, including the HIMARS missile. However, he said Russian troops could now easily repel such attacks due to “new program updates. Now we have no problem detecting, tracking and destroying them,” he said. He added that his unit had downed about 10 HIMARS missiles, four of them in the last month.

Following the start of Russia's military operations in Ukraine, the US has provided Ukraine with a large arsenal of up to around $19 billion. According to the US Department of Defense, as of November 23, Washington has committed to supporting Kiev with 38 HIMARS and relevant ammunition.

Last Thursday, the Pentagon awarded a $431 million contract for the production of the HIMARS launcher to Lockheed Martin to "satisfy the urgent need to support" the US Army and Washington's foreign partners. The deal is expected to be finalized by the end of 2025.

Russian officials have repeatedly warned the West against pumping weapons into Ukraine, arguing this will only prolong the conflict. Moscow also says Kiev used HIMARS missiles to carry out attacks on residential blocks and other civilian infrastructure, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries in Donbass and others that were recently incorporated into Russia's former Ukrainian territory.

I'm tickled that the Russian invaders no longer fear the HIMARS ... they will more readily die! No problem.
