US Approves Pakistan's $450 million F-16 Fleet Support Program

Washington - The US State Department has made the decision to approve a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to the Pakistani government for the US$450 million F-16 fleet sustainability support program.

The decision was in response to a request by Islamabad to apply for support for their F-16 fleet. Pakistan's F-16 fleet sustainability support program includes:

  1. Participation in the F-16 Aircraft Structural Integrity Program
  2. Electronic Combat International Security Assistance Program
  3. International Machinery Management Program
  4. Machine Component Improvement Program, and other technical coordination groups
  5. Modification and support of aircraft and engine hardware and software
  6. Repair/return of aircraft and engine parts
  7. Accessories and supporting equipment
  8. Confidential and non-confidential software and software support
  9. Publications, manuals and technical documentation
  10. Precision measurement, calibration, lab equipment and technical support services
  11. Studies and surveys
  12. Other related elements of aircraft maintenance and program support
  13. The proposed sale does not include any new capabilities, weapons, or ammunition.

As posted on the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) website, the proposed FMS program will support US foreign policy and national security goals by enabling Pakistan to maintain interoperability with US and partner forces.

This is both to support ongoing counterterrorism efforts and in preparation for future emergency operations.

Pakistan is said to have no trouble absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces. Work on the contract will be carried out by Lockheed Martin Corporation, in Fort Worth, Texas.
