Donetsk is the de facto capital of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, in the Donbas coal region of eastern Ukraine. Part of the territory has been controlled by pro-Russian separatists since 2014.

The area has been the target of intense fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces who launched an offensive in Ukraine on February 24. "Starting this morning, massive enemy bombardment targeted the capital of the republic," the pro-Russian forces said in a statement.

It added that more than 200 155mm caliber artillery shells fell in several districts of Donetsk on Saturday. Russian news agencies reported that the shooting targeted a cinema and cafe in the city center.

Due to heavy and incessant artillery shelling, city authorities and law enforcement agencies have asked residents via social networks and Telegram channels to stay in shelters.

The Voroshilovsky district in Donetsk has been under attack for more than half an hour. People take shelter in basements, first floors of hotels or cafes.
